Hurricane Insurance
Hurricane insurance is meant to protect you in the event of damage or loss due to one of these catastrophic storms.

Hurricane insurance can be in the form of homeowners insurance, which will cover the structure and contents in the face of the storm.  But, because hurricanes can cause a great deal of rainfall, your hurricane insurance may need to include flood insurance to protect you in the case of rising water.

Who is eligible for hurricane insurance?

If you are a homeowner, business owner, apartment renter, or condo owner or renter, you can purchase insurance to protect you against the devastation of catastrophic hurricanes.  In the case of renters, you will be purchasing insurance that will cover the contents of the dwelling you are renting.  For homeowners, business owners, and condo owners, you are purchasing insurance for protection of the contents and structures in the event of a hurricane.

Know Your Policy

Hurricane insurance policies are not all the same.  You should make sure you understand what your policy will cover in the event of a hurricane.  Some homeowners insurance policies do not allow for replacement cost of the items, but actually gives you a depreciated value of your possessions.  Homeowners policies do not generally cover flooding, so you will need to ensure you have the appropriate flood insurance to cover the damage caused by rising water when a hurricane dumps large quantities of rain in an area.

Where can I get more information?

Each state has a Department of Insurance that can give you information on hurricane insurance laws and companies in your state.  You should know what your state says about protecting yourself and our property in the event of a major hurricane.  In 2008, three small hurricanes caused billions of dollars in damage up and down the Gulf Coast.

Friends and family are also good sources of information based on their own experiences with their insurance companies.  Coworkers are another group you may ask about hurricane insurance.

Even after you do all your research to find the best hurricane insurance company, you can still have a bad faith claim. Make sure you know how to file your claim, what is covered, and what to expect from your insurance company to avoid delays.

If you are the victim of damage or loss from a hurricane and you need help getting your hurricane insurance company to pay your claim as you paid your premiums, in good faith, contact the hurricane attorneys at Arnold & Itkin LLP for a free consultation.   We will never charge you a fee and our cases are taken on contingency only.
