Hurricane Gustav Claims
Hurricane Gustav came ashore near Cocodrie, Louisiana on August 31, 2008 as a Category 2 hurricane. Even though the hurricane brought heavy rains, most of the damage caused by the hurricane was wind damages.

In Louisiana, Hurricane Gustav came ashore with 115 mph winds. The hurricane continued northeast across Louisiana. The high winds coupled with heavy rainfall left 34 parishes classified as disaster areas. Hurricane Gustav caused widespread wind damage in Baton Rouge and shut the city down for days. New Orleans also suffered significant wind damage.

Damaging Winds

High winds from Hurricane Gustav blew down trees that damaged nearby structures, cars, and power lines. High winds also blew down signs, blew out windows, and damaged roofs. When a house loses all or part of its roof, rain pours in and further damages the structure and its contents.

Central and northern Louisiana was also hit by high winds. The winds blew down trees, knocked out power lines, and damaged buildings throughout the area. Hurricane Gustav also dumped as much as 20 inches of rain causing flooding in some areas.

Multiple States suffer damage

Louisiana was not the only state to feel the effects of Hurricane Gustav. Mississippi, Alabama, and Arkansas also suffered losses. Fourteen tornadoes were spawned in Mississippi and Alabama. The 15-foot storm surge from the hurricane caused flooding along the Mississippi coast. The storm surge and large waves caused damage to the beachfront homes on Dauphin Island. Parts of Arkansas received as much as a foot of rain causing flooding problems.

Even though Hurricane Gustav was a rather small hurricane, it caused considerable damage. Because of where it made landfall, the petroleum industry shut down chemical plants in the area. Workers on offshore oil platforms were also removed so this shut down much of the petroleum flow from the region.

Hurricane Gustav Claim denied?

Insurance claims are sometimes denied or stalled by unfair tactics used by insurance companies. You may also have an additional claim if your house was left uninhabitable by Hurricane Gustav. If you filed a claim for damage to your home, contents, or car, and it was not fairly settled, you should contact an attorney.

Hurricane Gustav caused a considerable amount of wind damage. Insurance adjusters sometimes underestimate the amount of damage or the cost of the repairs. Sometimes additional damage is discovered once repairs are started. In these types of cases, you have the right to go back and get an additional settlement to cover these costs. These additional costs are not the responsibility of the homeowner just because they were missed by the insurance adjuster.

If you experienced a loss from Hurricane Gustav and your claim was denied or unfairly settled, you have the right to appeal.
